Stronger Struts
How can you make a strut much stronger without making it much heavier?
The following photograph illustrates one approach:

The photo shows a strut from The Columbus Center in
Baltimore.
This arrangement simulates a cigar shape. It is aimed an
preventing the strut from bowing in the middle before
breaking.
The idea is that this type of strut can be substituted for
normal ones, improving strength in the process.
Two or more stabilising points could be added along the length
of the strut further improving strength.
Typically, the cables need not be anchored - except
at either end of the strut.
